Flying into Rapid City South Dakota, Mount Rushmore is a short 25-mile ride. We always wanted to see Mount Rushmore as it was on our Bucket List. We rented a car and headed out on US-16 East. After driving about 20 miles you could start to see the mountainside monument completed in 1941. The granite faces of the Presidents are approximately 60 feet high, which once there it didn’t seem as large as it appeared from a distance. At the monument there is a museum that has interactive exhibits as well as very impressive movies on the making of the monument. There is no entrance fee however there is a $10.00 parking fee. You can also, swing by the Crazy Horse Memorial that is being carved out of the mountain which is about 16 miles from Mount Rushmore. While in South Dakota we thought we might as well go and see the famed “Sturgis” where the huge motorcycle rally is held in August for 10 days. While nothing was happening in this small town in October with a population of approximately 7000, its hard to believe that 500,000 bikers converged in town for this 10-day rally in 2017.
